Commercial salvage has come to have a huge effect on Underwater Cultural Heritage. Although this issue has been recognised and addressed with the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage, lack of comprehensive ratification means there is still work to be done. Conservators must recognize the part they have to play in this issue, as the dangers are ones that our practice should strive to work against.
