Helping to Restore More than Artefacts: Natural Disasters and Participatory Conservation of Cultural Heritage by Madeline Hagerman (UCL Institute of Archaeology)

This poster discusses participatory conservation after natural disasters. Its main focus is on the benefits of conservators working directly with affected communities and the ethical issues stemming from that collaboration. Madeline Hagerman concentrates specifically on the 2010 Haitian earthquake and the Haitian Cultural Recovery Centre, which directly involved Haitians in the process of conserving artwork. The aim of the poster is to show that the HCRC is a model for participatory conservation which could be implemented in other natural disasters, such as the Philippines typhoon.

This is the abstract of a poster to be presented at 'The impact of cross-disciplinary conservation on social development', the UCL Institute of Archaeology Annual Conference 2014. 

The conference will be held Friday and Saturday, 16 & 17 May 2014, at the UCL Institute of Archaeology in Lecture Theatre G6 from 8:30 to 18:00.  Conference posters will be on display all day Friday in room 612.
