Building conservation capacity in the Western Balkans by Dominica D’Arcangelo, Sally MacDonald, Melina Smirniou (Heritage Without Boards & University College London)

Heritage Without Borders (HWB) is a volunteer organisation that works internationally to support heritage projects and build capacity in heritage skills. This poster presents a series of workshops and summer schools, organised by the HWB, that have taken place in the Western Balkans since 2011. The poster discusses how these workshops promoted collaboration and networking among heritage professionals in the region; how a close interaction between local and international specialists was fundamental for a successful outcome; and also how its UK volunteers benefitted from the experience by working in challenging contexts and increasing their awareness of global conservation needs.

This is the abstract of a poster to be presented at 'The impact of cross-disciplinary conservation on social development', the UCL Institute of Archaeology Annual Conference 2014. 
The conference will be held Friday and Saturday, 16 & 17 May 2014, at the UCL Institute of Archaeology in Lecture Theatre G6 from 8:30 to 18:00.  Conference posters will be on display all day Friday in room 612.
