New grant for the conservation of Auschwitz-Birkenau

According to the Art Daily the " Auschwitz-Birkenau Fund" was set up in 2009 to gather
money to maintain the site of Auschwitz-Birkenau. More than $100 million has been raised
this far.
The poor condition of sections of the site has been widely reported - but no details on what
is actually going be done have been publicized.

  1. I think it's a good thing that a fund has finally been established to preserve this site.

If you visit the site Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation you can download the Auschwitz-Birkenau Foundation folder "The Preservation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Our Responsibility for Future Generations".

This folder contains details about the current situation of the site, what is going to be conserved, how the buildings and objects are going to be conserved, how much the conservation is expected to cost, and how long the work is expected to take.

  2. Indeed, a very valuable and relevant conservation project!

  3. I think this is great! But how will they preserve the "authenticity" of the site? are they going to replace things? It seems like the site is to provide concrete evidence, real and unaltered. By replacing any materials I think it would change it. If the barbed wire that surrounds it corrodes will it be replaced? I think that in the case of this site they have to be very careful about altering the materials because it could take away from the authenticity and become something for skeptics to use against it
